준태: 오윤 이 노래 한번 들어봐바? 방금 새로 쓴거야.

(감정적인 90년대풍의 통기타락 노래를 부른다)

준태: 어때?

오윤좌: 음.. 나쁘지는 않은데..

준태: ‘나쁘진’..않다고?

오윤좌: 응 뭐 괜찮긴 한데... 근데 너무 “90년대” 야.

준태: “너무 90년대”는 도대체 무슨 말이야?

오윤좌: 음...자 한번 봐바. 이런 직접적인 코드, 지나치게 감성적인 가사- 다 90년대 알터너티브 락 때나 통하던 거잖아.

준태: 음 근데? 그게 무슨 문제라도 돼?

오윤좌: 아니 뭐 문제는 없지.. 지금이 x나 2021년 인것만 빼고는. 그런 건 이제 안팔려. “슬픔”은 이제 더 이상 트렌드가 아니거든. 사람들은 더 이상 “슬프지” 않아. “우울”하지.

준태: (혼란스러워 하며) 그게 무슨 차이인데?

오윤좌: 아 형 누앙스 차이자나! 현대성은 누앙스에 있어!

우리 세대에 과하게 진실한건 쿨하지 못해. 생각해봐 다들 먹을것도 풍족하고, 교육도 받았고, 가족도 있는데, 뭐 때매 막 슬픈 노래를 부를건데?

2021년 인생에 대해 막 성찰하고 눈물흘리고 그런건 구려. 2020년대는 술먹고, 클럽가고, 백화점가고, 여자랑 놀고, 구할수있음 약도 해보고, 얼마나 자기 인생이 기깔나는지 자랑하는거야. 그리고 그거 다~ 한 담에 “공허함”을 느끼는 거지. 아 물론 혼자 있을때만 몰래!

그런게 팔리는 거야. 그게 시대혼이고! 우리가 진짜 “공허함”에 대해서 노래를 부르고 싶으면, ‘과잉’을 거부하는게 아니라 끌어 안아야 해!

정신차려 더 이상 시대 정신은 락밴드가 아니거든. 시티팝이지 사람들은 형의 지나치게 감정적인 노래를 듣고 싶어하지 않아! 상상속 미국의 자본주의 유토피아를 낭만화하는 80년대 경제 호황기 일본인들의 유려하고 비싼 사운드를 듣고 싶어하지!

그니까 통기타 좀 버려! 우린 색소폰으로 가는 거야!



그렇게 ‘시티팝’이 쓰여졌다. 기억나지 않는 80년대에서 빌린 노스탈지아를 차용하여.


[February 2021, a flat near Oxford, England]

Jt: “Check this new song out. (Plays emotional 90s alt-rock song)

What do you think?”

Yune: “I mean it's not bad.”

JT: “not bad?”

Yune: “yeah I mean it's ok, but it's a bit too ‘90s’”

JT: “what the f**k is a bit too ‘90s’?”

Yune: “I mean look, the straight forward chords, the sappy lyrics - that's all 90s like alternative rock shit bro”

JT: “so? well what's wrong with that?”

Yune: “Well nothing really, expect that it’s fucking 2021 bro. That shit doesn’t sell anymore. ‘Being sad’ is out of trend. In 2021 you’re not sad. You’re ‘depressed’”

Jt:(confused) I don’t get the difference
Yune: It’s the “nuance”. Modernity is all about the “nuance” man. It's not cool anymore to be overly sincere. I mean you have enough to eat, have a family and an education. What are you sapping about?

You don't cry about your life in 2021. That ain't kewl bruh. You drink and go clubbing. You go to the mall and indulge in capitalism. Make money, do drugs if you can, f**k b**ches, and show off how much of a good time you're having.

And then you’re supposed to feel “empty”. But only secretly and when you're alone of course!

And that’s what sells. That's the zeitgeist. You need to convey emptiness by embracing- not denying- the excess.

The zeitgeist isn’t in rock bands. It's in city-pop! People don’t want to be sad and emotional; they want to listen to some lush, expensive sounds from the bubble era made by Japanese romanticizing the inexistent pax-americana-capitalist-utopia.

So F**k these acoustic guitars, we need some saxophones!


Hence Citipop was made, embracing borrowed nostalgia from the unremembered eighties.
