“This time, could you be more than some ‘shitty love song’?”

“부디 이번에는 “구린 사랑 노래” 보다 더 이실 수 있을까요?”


“어릴 때 쓴 노래에요. 한 19~20살 정도였던 거 같아요. 곡이든 소설이든, 이야기를 쓰다 보면 클리셰한 주제에 관해서 너무 보편적인 감성인가? 라는 고민은 드는 거 같아요. 특히 어렸을 때는 그러한 보편적 감성은 기피하려는 마음이 컸었죠.

조금 더 자신에게 솔직해진 지금에 와서야 보면, 제가 제일 좋아하는 곡들은 그런 단순한 노래들이 많아요. 단조로워 보이는 코드 진행에다 새로울 것 하나 없는 남녀관계에 관한 노래이지만 누구에겐 너무나도 와닿는 노래들이 있죠. 마치 밥 딜런의 곡들처럼요.

노래를 쓴다는 건 다른 사람에게 진심을 고백하는 거와 비슷하다고 생각해요. 마음이 전달이 될 때도, 그렇지 않을 때도 있듯이, 노래도 마찬 가지인 거 같습니다. 그저 그런 구린 결말로 끝나버릴 관계와 멋진 추억을 써 내려갈 사랑이 다르듯, 그저 그런 곡과 대단히 와닿는 그러한 사랑 노래들은 한 끗 차이면서도 결이 다른 그 무언가가 있어요. 그게 무엇이든, 제 입장에서는 최대한 진심을 담는 것 밖에 할 수 있는 게 없죠.

그래서 사랑 노래이기도 하지만 “사랑 노래”에 대한 노래이기도 해요.”


I wrote this song when I was young. I think I was maybe nineteen or twenty. I think writers often find themselves wondering if their subject matter is too generic. When I first started writing, I too remember considering “generality” an enemy.

Now that I’ve grown to be more honest with myself, I’m able to openly admit that most of my favorite songs are usually the more simple ones. Yes, the ones with cliche-pop chord progressions that sing about the same-old “lover stuff”. Still, I find some songs, seemingly without anything novel, still manage to really ring something in your heart. Like a lot of Bob Dylan stuff.


I think writing a song is like letting another person know how you feel. Sometimes it will comes across; sometimes it won’t. And as there are things that separate the shitty relationships from the ones that will be written in you for eternity, there’s also something that sets apart the mundane songs from the ones that really come to hold a place inside us.

And whatever that difference maybe, all we can do on our part is to pour in our hearts. I think that was the feeling I was trying to capture when I wrote this one.

So, in a way, while this song is a “love song”, it’s also a “song about love songs”.
