아편굴 처녀가 들려준 이야기 (Secret Stories Heard From A Girl Of An Opium Den)


음반 기획은 미국 필라델피아에 소재한 음반사 Burt Toast Vinyl의 제안을 통해 2005년 처음 시작되었다. 미국/유럽 발매용 LP를 만들기 위한 기획이었으나, 5년여의 시간이 흐르는 사이 별도의 잡지/음반 발매 등의 작업이 계속 이어지며 이를 포함하는 동시에 국내외를 겸하는 첫 정규음반 제작을 위한 프로젝트로 확장되었다.

The production of the album started back in 2005, through the proposal of Burnt Toast Vinyl, a record company in Philadelphia. The initial plan was to make an LP for Europe and the U.S..

As additional publications and tracks were released during the five years that passed, Byul.org & Club Bidanbaem decided to make it as a first official album internationally and domestically.


곡들은 '모임 별'이 기획한 비정기 간행물 '월간뱀파이어'의 부록 콤팩트디스크들과 여러 형태로 만들어진 ep 음반들에 수록된 트랙들 중 선정되었다.

The tracks were selected from the compact discs supplemented in the irregular publication 'Monthly Vampire, A Magazine' (which is not really monthly at all) and from various EPs.


LP는 더블 자켓 형태이고 14곡을 수록하고 있으며, CD에는 수록되지 않은 '약속'이 포함되어 있다.

CD는 싱글 오디오디스크 형태이며 14곡을 수록하고 있다. LP에는 수록되지 않은 '멍청이들'이 포함되어 있다.

The double-jacketed LP has 14 tracks in it, including the track 'A Promise', which is not in the CD.

CD is a single audio disc with 14 tracks in it, including the track 'Idiots', which is not in the LP.


앨범 제목은 오랜 논의 끝에 구성원 중 한명인 조월의 제안에 따라 결정되었다.

The title of the album was suggested by Jowall, one of Byul.org's members.


음반에 수록된 곡인 '아편굴 처녀가 들려준 이야기'의 뮤직비디오는 The Dark Night Film Festival의 남궁선 감독이 작업했다. 2010년 공개된 '태평양' 또한 리마스터된 음원과 이전에 수록되지 않았던 장면들을 포함하여 재작업되었다. _비단뱀클럽

The music video for the track 'Secret Stories Heard from a Girl in an Opium Den' was directed by Sun Namkoong from The Dark Night Film Festival. The video she made for 'Pacific' has also been slightly revised for the release, which features some footage that was not included in the 2010 video. _Club Bidanbaem

'모임 별'은 우연히 만난 친구들의 느슨한 술모임으로 시작되었다.

Byul.org began as a loose group of friends who occasionally had drinking sessions together.


처음 모였을 때 우린 어렸고 어리석었으며 그랬기에 무모할 수 있었다. 아무런 준비도 없이 잡지를 만들어 보겠다며 도안부터 시작했고, 이런 저런 악기를 연주하며 만나게 된 벗들의 일상을 투박한 지면과 음악에 담아냈다. 그리고 그렇게 만들어진 결과물은 다시 우리를 또다른 동료들이 있는 곳으로 데리고 가 주었다.

We were young and foolish back then, which made us brave. Out of nowhere we started drawing sketches for a magazine, in which we put in rough records of our friends. In turn, the magazine brought us to more friends.


이 음반은 그런 과정에서 만들어진 이야기와 소리들을 담고 있다. 음반은 2005년 레이블의 기획과 제안으로 논의가 시작되었으나, 우리의 오랜 망설임으로 인해 이제야 완성될 수 있었다.

This album is a collection of stories and sounds from such activities. Burnt Toast Vinyl had originally suggested the production of this album back in 2005. After much hesitation, it is finally finished.


이 음반을 무엇이라 부를 수 있을까. 여러가지 방식의 기술적 구분이 가능하겠지만, '모임 별'의 첫 정규음반 '아편굴 처녀가 들려준 이야기'면 충분하지 않을까 싶다.

So what should we call this album? Technically there are many ways we could call it, but we'll just put it this way; the first official album of 'Byul.org', titled 'Stories We Heard from a Girl in an Opium Den.'


처음 만난 이래 여러 해가 지났지만 지금도 우린 함께 무엇인가를 만들고 있으며, 어리석고 느슨한 술모임으로써 오랜 그리고 새로운 벗들과 함께 술잔을 기울이고 있다. _모임 별

Many years have past since we first met each other. We are still making things together with old and new friends as foolish drinking buddies. _Byul.org
